It was a busy day at work. Had to attend a couple to quick meeting in the afternoon due to which I had skipped my lunch. And in the evening didn’t feel like eating much so had ordered for a sandwich. Just a sandwich for the entire day!!! Man that’s not me…
On the way back home was thinking about what mom would have ready for dinner. May be roti and some vegetable or rice and sambar. By the time I got home I was dying of hunger. Upon asking mom what’s in dinner, she asked me to freshen up while she would get it served. I returned quickly than what she would have expected. She had already served the food, and I was surprised to see what was served. Mom had prepared “Dal Dhokli“ a very popular dish from Gujarat.
It was very tempting and I was very hungry, I couldn’t wait any longer and started without waiting for other family members to join in. Believe me it was amazing and mom had decorated it so well that it would even tempt a fully satisfied stomach.
I will quickly share the recipe with you in-case you are thinking to prepare it after having a look at the picture. Got the download from mom for this but keeping it short.
There are 2 preparations: 1) Dal & 2) Dhokli (ingredients proportion according to your requirements – as I wont be the right person to guide you on that)
For Dhokli: Add wheat flour, Chana dal flour, cumin powder, asafoetida powder, turmeric powder, little oil, salt to taste and water for kneading the dough. Now knead the dough for the dhokli and keep it aside for sometime.
For Dal: Heat oil in a pan or kadhai then add cumin seeds. As soon as they start spluttering, add asafoetida powder, turmeric powder and red chili powder. Also add pressured cooked and churned tur dal into the pan or kadhai. Stir and fry for a minute. Now add water, salt(to taste), ginger, green chilies, curry leaves, tomatoes, jaggery and tamarind. Then add boiled groundnuts into it and let the dal boil for a few minutes.
From the dough roll out chappatis. The chappatis need to be cut into diamond or square shape. Cook them into the kadhai with the boiling dal for another 5 – 7 mins. Then serve it hot in a bowl by garnishing it with finely chopped – coriander leaves, tomatoes and onion/cabbage. You can even add a tea-spoon of desi/pure ghee on it.
There you go, your “Dal Dhokli“ is ready.

Well, this picture looks very different from what I eat in the name of Dal Dhokli, which I don’t like, anyway.
But it was a certainly a tasty post.
Hey Sakhi, thanks for enjoying the post.
I agree it is different from the regular Dal Dhokli coz my mum customizes according to my dad taste. It looks different also as she garnishes it with lots of finely chopped tomatoes, cabbage and coriander.
Haha, I should be thanking you for writing an enjoyable post.
Anyway, yes, it certainly looks very interesting.
